The Task

Budapest Airport embarked on a significant expansion project and sought guidance on developing effective commercial layouts aligned with its future terminal envelope and passenger flows.

Our Approach

Our team commenced by analysing passenger profiles and identifying future trends to determine passengers’ needs and preferences. We then conducted a benchmark on best practices for airport design to ensure future-proofed recommendations for the expansion project.

After thoroughly reviewing the expansion project and considering the risks and opportunities for the commercial business lines, our design team presented multiple commercial design options for airside, landside, and logistics areas. These concepts were then shared with the airport’s top management, commercial team, and main retailers for further discussion and refinement.

Using our proprietary revenue simulation model and input from all stakeholders, we developed a comprehensive business plan to support the assessment of the different alternatives.

The Result

In the end, an optimal design was identified, with a detailed design brief to be used in the selection tender for the master architectural and engineering company. The final design ensured optimal utilisation of the commercial area and delivered a diversified retail offer, enhancing the airport’s overall passenger experience and commercial revenues.

Our plan guaranteed best-practice levels in in-terminal commercial revenues, securing our client’s satisfaction.
