The Task

An international consultancy firm approached us for assistance in creating a comprehensive strategy for non-aeronautical activities at Calgary International Airport (YYC). The ultimate goals were to maximize the efficient use of existing and future assets, align the portfolio and services offered to the user profile and ensure the effectiveness of the overall commercial operation.

Our Approach

To achieve these goals, we began by conducting a thorough analysis of financial, operational and contractual data, existing commercial areas and layouts, among others, which allowed us to identify existing internal strengths and weaknesses. We then evaluated relevant global consumer behaviour trends and analysed the competitive landscape to identify risks and opportunities. Additionally, we performed a qualitative benchmark with best-practice airports to identify global trends in commercial concepts, both in concession mix and business models. Finally, our experts evaluated the airport’s contractual concept, tender models, and overall commercial daily management and provided key recommendations.

The Result

Based on our analyses and workshop sessions with YYC’s commercial team, our experts developed a vision, strategic objectives, and revenue enhancement measures for all in-terminal business lines in the short, medium, and long term.

The project’s output provided YYC with an actionable plan to support the deployment of unique and memorable experiences while optimising the revenues generated by the non-aeronautical business lines.
